Norwest is pleased to announce the establishment of our new subsidiary company in Belo Horizonte, Brazil. Norwest Brasil Engenharia has been officially incorporated, as of August 2016. The office will be managed by Paolo Gouvea. Mr. Gouvea is a Senior Geotechnical Engineer who has over 20 years' experience in mine geotechnical engineering. He has worked in Braziilian iron ore mines as well as in Canadian oil sands operations.
Along with the formal incorporation of Norwest Brasil Engenharia Ltda, we are pleased to also announce our registration in the State of Minas Gerais; our professional certification with the Brazilian engineering regulatory body, Conselho Federal de Engenharia e Agronomia (CONFEA); and the regional administration known as CREA. Registration with CONFEA – CREA is a recognition of Norwest’s qualifications and allows Norwest Brazil to practice engineering within Brazil and sign-off on design reports and documents.
Our work in Brazil is currently focused on geotechnical review and design for mine waste and water management structures including tailings dams, mine rock stockpiles, and earthen dams/water diversion structures. Our work to date has included review of tailing structures, oversight of site investigations and instrumentation/monitoring programs, as well as design of in-pit tailings storage systems.
It is exciting to be involved with our new clients in Brazil, and we look forward to expanding our business to undertake projects related to mine closure, water management, as well as mining engineering and planning. We are also pleased to be able to use our Brazilian company to support our existing clients with projects in Brazil and elsewhere in South America.
